Notre Dame fired head coach Charlie Weis on Monday after a disappointing stretch of four losses to end the regular season.
“We have great expectations for our football program, and we have not been able to meet those expectations,” athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a news release.
There’s been speculation that University of Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly will be considered among top candidates to replace Weis.
Kelly said in an interview Monday that he has already received business cards from South Bend, Ind., real estate agents.
Swarbick said he recommended to the university president Sunday night that Weis be let go with six years left on his contract.
Assistant head coach Rob Ianello will step in for Weis until a new head coach is hired.
The Fighting Irish started the season 6-2 but finished 6-6 after four consecutive losses.
Weis had a 35-27 record in five years as Irish head coach. His .565 winning percentage was worse than the .583 marks of his two predecessors, Tyrone Willingham and Bob Davie.
